About

What we're built around.

Datakey is a software and AI strategy firm that advises on, builds and invests in high-value technologies for clients and the community.

Four market drivers shape this work.

01 Market drivers

The four forces that shape what we build.

01

Information integrity

Integrity of information, data sovereignty, security, and trust in the knowledge that intelligent systems increasingly build and rely on. These concerns are not afterthoughts; they are systemic considerations for the AI age, and need to be addressed in the architecture itself.

02

Open Engagements

Open architectures, open models, and open source technology facilitate broader engagement from those who find value in the same objectives. The internet was developed as an open standard, and the same principles bring value now.

03

Collaboration and technology

Effective collaboration is the technology problem of our time. Whether across teams, organisations, or systems, the infrastructure for genuine coordination is brittle and underdeveloped. We build technology where deeper collaboration is the objective, not a feature added late.

04

Future AI systems

Intelligence is moving to where the data lives: on-device, on the edge, across federated networks. The systems that coordinate distributed intelligence are an order of magnitude more complex than centralised deployments. This is where the AI industry is heading.

Jordan Rancie

Principal · Founder

I'm Jordan, the principal across all engagements. Twenty-five years of hands-on technology delivery — architecture, engineering, AI, distributed systems — across energy, fintech, government, media, and maritime sectors in the UK, EU, and Australia. Roots in programming from a very young age, and a love for what I build that has stayed with me to this day.

Most of those years contracting close to the software — across teams, clients, and industries. That level of exposure and depth of knowledge is what I bring to every engagement.

Datakey's inception

I founded Datakey in 2020 to bring the full spectrum of that capability into one place — strategy, engineering, research, delivery. The underlying aim was to facilitate technology strategies that develop technology as an asset designed for growth: Technology that appreciates and enables over time rather than depreciates and restricts. This holds equally for data and information systems, software and AI.

About the research

Datakey was established as a research-first firm because I love diving into what isn't yet well understood. Over five years that has crystallised into a small set of research directions — multi-model neural architectures, distributed intelligent systems, software architectures of intelligent systems — that are valuable to clients and what I see as invaluable to the path forward.

03 How we work
01

Scale

Datakey runs with me and a small network of trusted professionals. We can operate as a single-person engagement or a team coalesced for a particular engagement.

02

Commitment

We take a small number of engagements and commit deeply to each. The engagement model — advisory, build, partnerships, research — gets shaped per partner around their objectives.

03

Depth

Every engagement benefits from depth that does not bill to the project. The research direction is active and serious, with applied R&D and long-term bets like mgraph and the Apple Silicon GPU vector database. Clients get the benefit of that depth as a constant.

04

Relationship

We approach each client dynamically as relationships that can grow in trust and measurable value. If there is a better path or unseen opportunity we will be honest about it. If something cannot be met we will be direct. If we see a long-term value proposition we will lay groundwork for it.
